Family
Hugo Harrison examines how his family have defined his life choices and career path in this thoughtful portrait of a chef unconsciously chasing his fathers approval.
Ive always thought that chefs are the epitome of approval & validation. Their need for it lies directly in front of you on a plate. It’s impossible to hide, and I think if you pushed hard enough even the most notorious chef would openly admit that they have a need for you to like their food, to feel recognised in their skill. Of course we all seek approval and validation in our lives, from our friends, colleagues, peers, parents and partners. We need it in some shape or form, and we have done since childhood. It’s integral to being a human being, it makes us feel connected, and gives a sense of belonging.
Having recently lost some very close friends, the depression had me questioning deeply what gets people out of bed in the morning. When studying why people do what they do, what led them to where they got to, Hugo’s story was pretty intriguing. His early contempt for food and and the industry was a shock to me, as I’ve always known him as a chef, and an incredibly talented and studious one at that. His passion for food spills out of his every pore and his obvious obsession for it leads him to a level of sorcery many cant compete with. So to find out that at an earlier stage he was happy to stay well away from that industry was a big surprise. I wanted to explore this with him through the lens of family, to understand why it was them that drove him away initially and then also them that pulled him back to food.
Im sure if you dig deep enough and search around, we can all pin what we do for jobs in some way to our parents. For the most part, I think we are all just children trying to make our parents proud.
